The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has admitted that he labored towards Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate within the 2024 Edo governorship election, as a result of he didn’t need former Governor Godwin Obaseki to supply his successor.
Wike made the revelation on Monday at a stakeholders’ assembly of the rainbow coalition in Abuja, the place he mentioned an alliance between components of the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) contributed to the ruling get together’s victory within the election.
The APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, defeated Ighodalo, who was backed by Obaseki, within the September 2024 governorship election.
Speaking on the assembly, Wike, a PDP member serving in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, mentioned the result of the election demonstrated how political alliances might affect electoral outcomes.
“In the last election that took place in Edo state, the victory was as a result of the coalition between the legacy of PDP and the APC,” he mentioned.
“We had to work together to make sure that the former governor, Governor Obaseki, did not produce his successor. And that is the truth. I was behind it, and I don’t have any regrets about it. So when people say that there is nothing like coalition, they tell lies.”
The FCT minister mentioned Okpebholo and Adams Oshiomhole, a former Edo governor and senator representing Edo North, might attest to the function the alliance performed in securing the APC’s victory.
Wike maintained that though Ighodalo was candidate, he refused to help him as a result of doing so would have allowed Obaseki to retain political affect by way of his successor.
“The truth of the matter is that it has been there, depending on how it is worked out. So the governor today, Senator Okpebholo, will know sincerely that it was that coalition,” he mentioned.
“Senator Adams Oshiomhole will even attest to the truth that it was that coalition that made us to defeat the PDP, regardless that I’m a member of PDP, however for that function I mentioned I wouldn’t help the incumbent governor to supply a successor, regardless that the candidate was an excellent candidate, who was the previous managing director of a financial institution.
“He came to my house more than three times. I said, ‘listen, you’re a good candidate, but for this election, I’m sorry, because this election is between us and the man who is bringing you, called Obaseki, ungrateful person, so returning you is like bringing him back, so I’m sorry. You have to fail,’ and he failed.”
The remarks got here amid rising political discussions surrounding the rainbow coalition, which has attracted consideration as political actors start positioning themselves forward of the 2027 normal elections.
In January, Wike described the coalition as a departure from typical get together politics, saying it represented a collective political motion centered on advancing the pursuits of the state.
However, the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has mentioned it will not endorse any alliance or political association able to undermining Tinubu’s re-election bid or the APC’s candidates within the 2027 elections.
