The President, Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NIEEE), Dr Felix Adeboye, has urged engineers to deploy digital applied sciences to speed up Nigeria’s power transition, enhance electrical energy entry and strengthen telecommunications infrastructure.
Adeboye made the decision on the twenty second International Conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunications (ICEPT 2026), held in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
He described the convention theme, “Energy Transition in the Digital Era: The Nexus, Challenges and Opportunities,” as apt.
He stated the convention offered a platform for information change, innovation, skilled networking and collaboration.
According to him, rising applied sciences, together with synthetic intelligence (AI), machine studying, the Internet of Things, digital twins and superior communication networks, are reworking power era, transmission, distribution and consumption.
He stated Nigeria wanted domestically related options to enhance grid resilience, combine renewable power, scale back technical and industrial losses, strengthen telecommunications infrastructure and appeal to funding.
“Our task is not merely to adopt new technologies, but to develop solutions that respond to our realities,” Adeboye stated.
He burdened that reaching a simply and inclusive power transition required collaboration amongst engineers, researchers, governments, {industry}, academia, buyers and communities.
Adeboye recognized the introduction of a devoted NIEEE Fellows Assembly as a significant spotlight of the convention.
He stated the meeting would look at the affect of AI on engineering apply, innovation {and professional} duty.
He stated discussions would cowl ethics, security, cybersecurity, human oversight, skilled accountability, training, requirements and regulation.
He added that college students and younger engineers would show their technical competence via quiz and venture exhibition competitions.
The NIEEE president urged members to translate information gained on the convention into sensible applied sciences, stronger industry-academia partnerships, sound insurance policies and sustainable engineering options.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr Mustafa Abdullahi, has known as for digital expertise integration into Nigeria’s power system to speed up the transition to cleaner power.
Abdullahi, the keynote speaker, was represented by Dr Manasseh Sheeta, Acting Director, National Centre for Energy Efficiency, University of Lagos.
He stated the world was present process two main transformations: the transition to a low-carbon power system and the fast development of digital expertise.
“For decades, we treated energy and digital technology as two separate industries. Today, those boundaries have entirely dissolved,” he stated.
He added that the way forward for power trusted how successfully each sectors have been built-in.
Abdullahi stated the normal centralised power system was evolving right into a decentralised community involving wind farms, photo voltaic installations, electrical automobile charging stations and battery storage programs.
He stated digital expertise was important for managing the rising power community effectively.
He defined that AI, digital twins and the Internet of Things might assist predict power era, steadiness electrical energy provide and demand, and enhance energy distribution.
He, nonetheless, recognized rising electrical energy demand pushed by digitalisation, cybersecurity threats and insufficient infrastructure as main challenges.
Also, the normal ruler of Nyenwele Rumueprikom Kingdom in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers, Amahule Owabie, counseled NIEEE for its contributions to Nigeria’s digital transformation within the power sector.
Owabie expressed confidence that the convention would supply useful insights and encourage communities to assist energy sector improvement. (NAN)
